HMS ALICE LIDDELL

SHEZAD DAWOOD - FACTUM ARTE

St Pancras Station, London

HMS Alice Liddell is a 5m-wide sculpture of an elaborate, Gothic revival-inspired spaceship that plays around the station's 19th-century design, blending it with a futuristic and steampunk fiction aesthetic. The initial concept was modelled by Factum Arte's 3D sculptor Irene Gaumé working closely with Shezad to create a seemingly impossible form.

Matt took the draft 3D model Shezad and Irene had created and produced a series of CG renderings and animations. These visuals helped win the bid for the commission.

A reference 3D model of St Pancras was used, however it had to be converted from a model that was just for visualisation, into a model that had geometry that could be fabricated. Matt did the conversion, cleaned and remodelled many elements. The model then had the correct geometry that could be 3D printed or CNC milled in polyurethane. The model was split between parts to be milled in panels and more complex 3D geometry for 3D printing. Matt prepared all the files for 3D printing, some large parts were printed externally, and small details were printed by Matt in the studio.

The parts were assembled by the workshop team and finished with a tri-chromatic paint (dark green, magenta and gold).
